Prof. Dr.-Eng. Steffen Marx

Prof. Steffen Marx’s research focuses on design developments for high-speed railroad bridges and wind turbines, resonance effects and fatigue phenomena of concrete structures, as well as structural monitoring and experimental structural investigation.


Professional activities

  • Since 2020: Technical University of Dresden, Institute for Concrete Structures, DB Netz AG – endowed professorship for civil engineering
  • 2011-2020: Leibniz University of Hannover, W3 professorship solid construction, head of the Institute for Solid Construction, with 23 staff members
  • Since 2011: Founder and partner of the company Marx Krontal Partner, engineering company focusing on: Planning, diagnostics and monitoring
  • 2010-2011: University of California San Diego, Visiting Professor, (Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship)
  • 2007-2010: Technical University of Dresden, Institute for Solid Construction, Honorary Professor for Measurement and Test Engineering, responsible for teaching at the Institute
  • 2005-2007: DB ProjektBau GmbH, Southeast branch, head of the engineering and building construction department, head of the planning department with 60 employees at five locations. Planning of many engineering structures, e.g. the integral viaducts of the VDE°8 (Scherkonde viaduct, Unstrut viaduct)
  • 2004-2005: DB ProjektBau GmbH, Southeast Branch, Project Manager in the Dresden Project Center, Contract Responsibility for Project: “Flood Damage Removal Pirna Border” (approx. € 30 million)
  • 2001-2003: DE-Consult GmbH and DB ProjektBau GmbH, Southeast Branch, Team Leader for Structural Engineering, Head of the Planning Department with 10 employees
  • 1999-2001: BGS Ingenieur sozietät Dresden, planning engineer and project manager, implementation planning, tendering and inspection of engineering and building structures, processing of special proposals, planning coordination
  • 1995-1999: Bauhaus-University Weimar; professorship in solid construction, research staff member, doctoral thesis on the topic: “Application of mathematical optimization in the geometric and physical nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete structures” passed with “summa cum laude
  • 1999: Doctorate at the Bauhaus University Weimar; professorship solid construction
  • 1990: VEB Monument preservation Dresden, special craftsman stone
  • 1988–1990: Basic military service
