“2255” is actually just the serial number assigned to the Priority Program (SPP) “Cultural Heritage Construction” by the German Research Foundation (DFG). In conjunction with the abbreviation “SPP”, it now stands as a word mark for the research network in its entirety.

With Priority Programs (SPP), the German Research Foundation (DFG) funds large research networks on currently particularly relevant topics. Spread across many locations, the interdisciplinary cooperation of the individual sub-projects generates new findings and synergies.

“Cultural heritage construction” stands for constructions in the building industry that are of particular historical significance. The work in SPP 2255 focuses on the era of high modernism (around 1880 – 1970). Their construction heritage is particularly interesting – and often particularly endangered.

In fact, even outstanding examples of engineering architecture are often completely hidden from public view. However, this does not diminish the perhaps extraordinarily high heritage value of these “hidden structures” – regardless of their visibility or even beauty!

Beyond classical architectural categories, the creations of engineers have written and continue to write an autonomous narrative of the history of construction. Especially in the buildings of high modernism, it is often the load-bearing structures and manufacturing processes that define the special monumental value.

For the future task of “engineering in existing buildings”, historical knowledge of structures and building materials is just as important as expertise in repair and refurbishment. The SPP 2255 therefore aims to establish networked assessment and action strategies.
