WORKSHOP “SPP EXHIBITION BASED ON MODELS” OF THE SUBPROJECTS C2 AND C4 IN FREIBERG

September 14, 2022 at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg

On September 14, 2022, a compact workshop of the subprojects C2 “Measurement models in civil engineering” and C4 “Development of lightweight steel and metal construction in the GDR” took place in the rooms of the Custody of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, where possibilities were exchanged on how the models investigated in SPP 2255 could be presented to the public in the form of a scientific exhibition.

The discussion was preceded by a tour of the model collection of the VEB Metalleichtbaukombinat (MLK), which comprises around 80 objects and has been housed at TU Bergakademie Freiberg since the 1990s. Custodian Andreas Benz and project team member Annkathrin Heinrich presented the models that have been museologically recorded and examined as part of the SPP project C4 “Lightweight steel and metal construction in the GDR”.
After a joint tour of the model room, which was specially built for the project, the participants had the opportunity to form their own impression of the individual pieces. The almost completely reconstructed replica of an installation of the MLK trade fair stand from the BAU in Munich in 1988, based on archive material, attracted particular attention.

Helmuth Albrecht (TU Bergakademie Freiberg) and Christiane Weber (University of Innsbruck) then led an open discussion on how these and other models from other sub-projects could be used for a scientific exhibition project. The advantages and disadvantages of different variants in terms of form, location and time period were discussed. Werner Lorenz and Roland May (BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg) also contributed the perspective of the SPP-2255 coordination.
After a coffee break, the workshop continued with three presentations. First, Annkathrin Heinrich presented the results of the C4 project to date, supplementing the presentations in the model room. Christiane Weber then gave an insight into the measurement models researched in project C2 “Measurement models in civil engineering”. The presentation of the digital twins created using the models attracted particular attention. Finally, Dirk Bühler, long-standing curator at the Deutsches Museum, used bridge structures to discuss possible ways of presenting technical buildings in museums.

The workshop fulfilled its aim of providing an initial impetus for the preparation of a scientific exhibition. The discussion was continued at the next SPP annual conference in Dessau. At the annual conference in Braunschweig in 2023, the exhibition “Impressions and Findings” was realized for the first time.
